First Nigerian School to Teach Yoruba and Igbo
ZAMFARA, the first Nigerian state to adopt Sharia has scored yet another first. It is to become the first state in the federation to introduce two additional Nigerian ethnic languages, Yoruba and Igbo, into its Primary and secondary school curriculum.
The commissioner for special education, Alhaji Daya Naigeria told reporters in Gusau that from September 2004, all primary and secondary schools will teach Yoruba and Igbo in addition to Hausa.
“I hope this will correct the impression that Sharia is the only good thing we can contribute to the nation,” he said. “Our children must know the languages which generate Oil, Progress and Commerce, in addition to the Hausa, the quintessential language of Political Power.”
